Mindful Monsters from Scope, launching today

I recently wrote about mindfulness as a parent and I'm always keen to find out about new activities and ideas for Ethan, so when I heard about the new Mindful Monsters activity cards from disability charity Scope, I was keen to find out more.

Launching today, Mindful Monsters is a way to donate to Scope in return for a fun set of activity cards. Each pack gives us parents a new way to help our children to develop important life skills through exploring the concept of mindfulness, while spending quality time together. We just had the first pack come through in the post and they are clear, bright and feature quick and easy activities that we can do with Ethan, any time, any where.

Under four key areas - concentration, positivity, creativity and relaxation - each pack sent out monthly includes a mix of cards to add to your collection.

Research  has shown that practising mindfulness as a family can have many benefits:

·        More resilience in day-to-day life
·        Improved focus
·        Better understanding of their emotions
·        A sense of calm
·        More positive thinking – promoting kindness and gratitude

Of course, being monster themed is a big plus for our own little monster and I like both the concept and fun design of the cards. It's a simple idea but something that is fun to try, a monthly event to look forward to when more come in the post and really handy to have in the car, for long trips.

Recently I've noticed that Ethan knows the game 'I spy' so the time we have in the car together can be put to good use and these cards have given me some new ideas. I'm also keen to try and help him develop his concentration skills - he's fine by himself when he's playing, but it can be difficult to keep his attention if I'm asking him something!

It's good to be silly sometimes and a lot of the thinking behind the cards is about encouraging children to think about their actions or feelings, or to see something in a different way, without it coming across as something they can't relate to or a boring thing to do.

I think Ethan would agree!

About Scope:

Scope exists to make this country a place where disabled people have the same opportunities as everyone else. Until then, we'll be here. We provide support, information and advice to more than a quarter of a million disabled people and their families every year. We raise awareness of the issues that matter. And with your support, we'll keep driving change across society until this country is great for everyone.

The hope is that Mindful Monsters can raise awareness of all that Scope do, as they hope to be able to help 2 million families by 2022 (they already help 250,000 each year). To find out more, visit Mindful Monsters and sign up to receive the activity cards for a £7.50 donation each month.

* I was introduced to Mindful Monsters but all opinions are my own and I wanted to share this great initiative with my readers.
