Sun safety made simple for kids

Much like his Daddy, Ethan isn't a fan of applying sun cream most days. Sometimes, he lets me apply it, but more often than not, he really isn't keen and of course when he goes to school, he's left to his own devices and unfortunately, that's meant that on quite a few days, he hasn't worn sunscreen.

He is meant to apply sun cream before he plays outside, and he has a sun hat too, but I have heard from him that he doesn't do this all the time and I have picked him up from school, playing on the fields or on the playground, and there is no hat in sight - and a pink flush across his cheeks.

He's got sensitive skin, just like me, and being so fair, with many freckles coming through now on his nose and the tops of his cheeks, we really are cautious and concerned about him in the sun.

There have been days where he has come back and it's clear that his ears have picked up the sun, or there's been a red streak on the tops of his cheeks, which makes me really upset. I know it's not the teacher's job to apply it, but they should be stricter about overseeing if the children are doing it before they are let outside.

I've been applying some cream to his face and ears in the morning, but you know how energetic they are at five years old, and the state he comes in at the end of the day, I just know that one application isn't enough.

The team at Calypso Sun Care kindly sent us what could be the solution to Ethan's sun cream woes.

The Kids Coloured Roll-On SPF30 (RRP £3.99) is a new product which has a special water-resistant formulation and is blue in colour, until you rub the cream into the skin.

The roll-on application makes it really easy for Ethan to use, and he seems to think it's fun too this way (far less fiddly) whilst he laughs at how it turns his arms blue momentarily. It's also designed for sensitive skin and so far, so good - he's happily gone off to school with it today in his school bag, with promises of applying it himself later before he goes outside...

...we shall see!

Here's some more information from Calypso on their latest products for the whole family, including this convenient roll on, and their tips for looking after your child's skin in the sun:

With summer just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about sun protection, and with a 50-strong product range, Calypso is a one-stop shop for all your sun care needs. We have added even more great products to our range this year, which provide value for money and are suitable for the whole family.

Ensuring more time is spent enjoying the summer months, Calypso’s Once a Day range allows for one thorough application of sun protection, promising sun safety for the rest of the day. In addition to the five sun protection products ranging from SPF10 to SPF50+, we have added a Tan & Protect range, which is available in SPF15 and SPF25. It combines UVA/UVB protection with melanin boosting ingredients to increase the underlying process of tanning within the skin, providing a longer-lasting tan for sun worshippers.

Our Press & Protect range repairs skin with the assistance of anti-ageing ingredients, keeping the skin you are in protected and looking young and healthy for longer. It has a unique guide on the back of the packaging, ensuring you apply the correct amount of sunscreen to adequately protect your skin from the sun.

Children are more susceptible to UV related skin damage than adults. We obtain most of our lifetime’s sun exposure as children and teenagers. It is known that sunburn during childhood can lead to severe skin damage in later years. You should use a specially formulated high factor product for children, such as our Once a Day SPF40 or our Sensitive Sun Lotion Spray SPF50+ and ensure it is re-applied, especially after swimming and towelling. Ideally, children should be covered up with loose clothes and wide brimmed hats. Most importantly, children under 6 months should be kept out of direct sunlight.

Calypso sun protection is available to buy in Home Bargains, B&M Bargains, Bodycare, TJ Hughes, Well Pharmacy, Semichem, Asda, Wilko, Aldi and independent pharmacies.
